Born to Haitian parents, Derulo’s real name is actually Jason Joel Desrouleaux, with his stage name simply standing as an alternate spelling of his surname! Suffice to say, Derulo started his career in music writing for other artists including the likes of Diddy, Grant Goan, Danity Kant, Cassie and Lil Wayne among a host of others.

What you may not know is in 2006, Derulo actually won the grand prize on TV show Showtime at the Apollo, and he was quickly discovered by Beluga Heights Records producer J. R. Rotem, later saying of the singer “Jason Derulo has one of the most impressive work ethics I’ve ever come across – he just keeps knocking out songs in the studio.
